Join us as we interview Dr. Alvin McLean, Jr. to discuss his career, his passion for the field of psychology, and his mission to provide the next generation of behavioral health providers with the tools they need to practice their chosen specialty in today’s workforce.
Alvin McLean, Jr. is a professor of clinical psychology and Co-Director of Clinical Training at John F. Kennedy University’s Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Program. Dr. McLean received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology and psychophysiology at the University of Wisconsin and he completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the University of Washington in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.
He was also on faculty in this department for seven years where his areas of research included the neuropsychological and psychosocial sequelae of traumatic brain injury, neuro-pharmacology, and care management strategies to improve daily functioning after brain and spinal cord injuries. Dr. McLean has published and presented extensively in these areas of investigation.
In the corporate sector of healthcare, Dr. McLean developed residential, outpatient and home-based rehabilitation programs for persons with brain and spinal cord injuries. Currently, Dr. McLean’s focus is on training clinical doctoral students in psychological assessment, approaches to integrated healthcare. He coordinates the training students receive at various clinical practicum sites throughout the North California Bay Area.
Dr. McLean is active in his community. He is a member of the Board of Regents for Samuel Merritt University and is also on the Board of the Bay Area Albert Schweitzer Fellowship and he serves on the Advisory Board of the East Oakland Health Home Consortium. Dr. McLean is also the Minister of Music for Allen Temple Baptist Church of Oakland, CA.
